Essential Equipment Every Basenji Owner Needs to Have - Part II Toys

Updated: Dec 26, 2024

Toys

Basenjis are smart and lively dogs that benefit from mental challenges. Toys like rope toys, balls, and chew toys can help prevent boredom and keep them entertained.

Basenjis are powerful hunting dogs, so their toys need to be appropriate for them. Soft dolls, balls, and similar toys are quickly destroyed by your Basenji.

The Ball

The quintessential and timeless toy exemplified by its simplicity is the Ball.

Basic Ball

The important issue to notice is where the poplar one is, whether it is inside, safe, or outside, which can be dangerous, as the dog may take it out and swallow it. See here an example of a good, safe ball.

See here an example of a ball with an outside squeak.

Naturally, when we think of balls, we think of fetch. However, teaching a dog, particularly a Basenji, to return a ball is not simple. I will show you how to train a Basenji to fetch a ball later in the training program.

Soccer Ball.

I found a durable pet toy shaped like a football with straps, perfect for dogs to chew on and use during training and play. Mika enjoys playing with it, attempting to "destroy" it by using the straps. Keep in mind that the straps don't hold up for long when Mika is especially "energetic," but she has fun with it while it lasts.

Canine Enrichment Toy

Dog chewing toys balls can been inserted with the food treats to improve the interest of your cute dogs, which can be used as dog fetch play balls for outdoor games. Perfect for interaction with your dog and keep puppy dogs from bite others.

A more advanced option could be a Wobbler Starmark Bob-A-Lot, allowing you to customize the top and bottom openings to accommodate different kinds of dog food and giving you the ability to regulate the challenge level.
